Since 2014, a worldwide survey organized by the American College of Sports Medicine ranks High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) in the top five fitness trends. Trends, not fads. Not only do people like HIIT training, but it’s also effective.
Here are a few reasons why HIIT is everyone’s favorite workout.
In a typical HIIT workout, you do short high-intensity intervals and alternate with active recovery or rest intervals. For example, you do a high-intensity movement, like sprinting or burpees, and then rest before starting the next interval. How do you know if it’s working? Your heart rate will elevate, and you’ll be out of breath. It’s challenging, but it’s also fun. We promise.
Not only are HIIT workouts effective in increasing your fitness, but they’re also convenient:
No Machines
HIIT workouts require little to no equipment. Most movements are bodyweight exercises.
Location
Because you don’t need large pieces of equipment, you can do a HIIT workout almost anywhere.
Efficiency
HIIT workouts don’t take that long to complete. Instead of running or going to the gym for an hour, you can get in a good workout in 30 minutes or less.
It’s no surprise that HIIT workouts are known for their intensity. But if you’re worried that you’re not ready for a HIIT workout, know that any exercise or movement can be modified to suit any fitness level.
Keep in mind that if you’re starting a new fitness program, make sure that you get the okay by your doctor before you begin. Once you get started, pay attention and listen to your body. Ramp up your training gradually and always modify as needed.
