We’re about two weeks into the new year. And unfortunately, now is the time people start giving up on their goals and intentions for the year.
There are a lot of things you can do that increase your chances of reaching your 2020 goals. There are also a lot of things that can cause some problems and make you want to give up.
Here are three ways NOT to reach your goals this year (and what you can do to increase your chances for success):
1. Set a goal you don’t really care about.
Do you find that you keep setting the same goals over and over, but you do not see results? It could be because you’re not invested in your goal. With goal-setting, sometimes the “why” behind a goal matters more than the goal itself. If you don’t genuinely care about your goals, then you probably won’t meet them. But if you set goals that matter to you, that you’re motivated to achieve, then you’re more likely to experience success.
2. Never create a plan.
Setting SMART goals for the year is a great way to improve your fitness. However, without a plan, you might struggle. To reach your fitness goals, you need a plan in place. Take a few minutes and think about the steps you need to take and then start taking them. Be as specific in your plan as possible.
3. Take on too much.
When you’re motivated to set goals and make a change, be careful that you’re not taking on too much. Let’s say your goal is to go to the gym three times a week. That’s great! But what if your goals also include starting a meditation practice, giving up sugar, getting more sleep, writing in a daily gratitude journal, meal planning every week, training for your first half-marathon, and doing ten minutes of yoga every day. It’s overwhelming just reading back through that list. Rather than taking on too much, getting overwhelmed, and not making any progress, choose one (maybe two) goals to focus on. Make that goal your top priority and put all of your energy into it.
