SMART-Goal-Setting-Pinnacle-Performance-and-FitnessWhen it comes to your fitness and performance, one way to narrow your focus and get results is through goal-setting. Setting SMART fitness goals means your goals are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-based.

Specific

By creating specific goals, not only do you narrow your focus, but you also can determine when you’ve achieved success. Goals like “lose weight” or “get fit” are broad and not clearly defined. Something like, “Lose 10 pounds by the end of the year,” is specific and you’ll know when you’ve reached this goal. Rather than having a vague idea of where you want to take your fitness, specific goals provide a sense of direction. And you have a better chance of realizing success.

Measurable

Once you’ve set a specific goal, the next step is to make sure that you have a way to measure your progress. A goal like, “Lose 10 pounds by the end of the year,” is measurable. Not only can you measure when you’ve accomplished this goal, but you can also measure your progress along the way.

Achievable

A goal should challenge you. But, it shouldn’t be so challenging that your chance of success is unlikely. You want to push yourself, but if you set a goal that’s not realistic, then the result will create a damaging drop in your motivation.

Relevant

Your fitness goals should be relevant to your current fitness level, as well as where you want to take your future fitness. If losing weight isn’t that important to you, then focus on performance. Now could be the time you train for that race you’ve always wanted to run. Or, you want to do your first pull-up. Set a goal that will challenge you, but also makes you excited and motivated to train and make progress.

Time-Based

Set goals with a timeline. Giving yourself a deadline will help you maintain motivation and add accountability to your training routine. If you find that you’ve set your goal for several months in the future, create smaller deadlines to use as benchmarks along the way.
