Once you’ve taken the necessary steps to create a consistent workout routine, what’s next? How can you make the most of your time spent at the gym?
Here are five ways to get more out of your next workout:
1. Use the warm-up wisely.
Your workout doesn’t start after the warm-up; it starts with the warm-up. Without a proper warm-up, you won’t be able to move as effectively. By warming-up, you prepare your body for what’s to come by increasing your heart rate and body temperature while diverting blood flow to your working muscles.
2. Use proper technique.
Another way to get more out of your workouts is by using proper technique. When you start getting tired, it’s easy to let your form slide a little bit. But at what cost? By maintaining good form, you’ll improve the quality of your movements while reducing your chances of getting injured.
3. Be intentional, and remember your goals.
When was the last time you revisited your fitness goals? If it’s been awhile, now is as good of a time as any. Keeping your fitness goals at the front of your mind, especially before starting a workout, is a great way to be more purposeful with your time at the gym. Set an intention for what you want to accomplish in each workout, and you’ll notice a difference in the results.
4. Push yourself beyond what’s comfortable.
In addition to being more intentional about your workouts, try to push yourself beyond what’s comfortable. You never want an exercise or workout to cause pain, but a little discomfort or mild soreness is okay. If you feel like you’re in a bit of a rut and no longer seeing results, pushing your effort level even just a bit more than what you’re used to might be the jumpstart that you need.
5. Recover properly.
Even when your workout is over, you can still take steps to get more out of your next workout through recovery. Make sure that you’re rehydrating and refueling with healthy food choices. Take some time to stretch and use a foam roller, and always try to get a quality night of sleep, so you’re ready for whatever your next workout entails.
